CHAPTER SIXTEEN

DAX KNEW IF he weren’t careful, this date with Lorelei could turn into a post-party night of sex. The heat was that high between them. No denying that, but even with the often stupid part of his body urging him that sex would be a stellar idea, Dax intended to take things slow.

Maybe even to a standstill.

Work schedules had helped with that since it’d taken a while for Lorelei and him to figure out a date night that didn’t clash with everything else going on in their lives. In Dax’s case, it was a one-day rodeo competition in Austin. He’d considered not going to that, but since this was supposed to be his farewell year, he wanted to do the scheduled events so he could go out with a bang.

But work hadn’t been the only stalling point to this date. So had all the legal crap that Julian and Aaron kept throwing at them. One stall tactic after another, but Curt had assured Dax that Aaron couldn’t stall forever, especially since the delays wouldn’t get him what he wanted.

Custody of Stellie.

Sooner or later, Aaron was going to have to concede that he wasn’t the child’s father and then move on to the next phase of the legal battle. Curt had warned him, though, that Aaron could still press for custody since he’d been married to Valerie at the time she’d given birth. It was a fight that Aaron would almost certainly lose. However, he could drag it out for a long time, all the while disrupting their lives.

Dax had considered just trying to pay Aaron off. Considered and dismissed it since it wouldn’t put an end to the battle. Nope. Aaron would no doubt just keep returning for more cash, using the threat of going after Stellie. It was best just to put a legal end to the threat so they could be rid of Aaron for good.

Gossip was still going strong about Lorelei’s college photos, but Dax was certain there’d be something else that would come along to replace it. Something low-down and dirty that Julian would dig up to try to smear anyone who was challenging his client. That could mean more dirt on the Fords who’d been forced to return home to battle Aaron’s claims about their illegal business practices. It could mean more dirt on Lorelei, something dredged up from her past. Or something about him. Plenty to dredge up there.

In the meantime, Dax was getting ready for a date.

Yep, he was taking Lorelei to Frankie’s First Date Party, and yes, he’d asked her out when their emotions and lust had been running high. But lust and sex had screwed up plenty of things for him in the past, and he couldn’t let it screw up his future with Lorelei. Because that in turn could mess up things with Stellie.
